The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives for Aba North and South Federal Constituency, following an alleged assault on a Bolt driver in Abuja.

According to Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, Ikwechegh is currently undergoing questioning at the Maitama Police Station.

The arrest follows a report filed by the victim, Stephen Abuwatseya, who claimed he was physically assaulted by the lawmaker during an altercation over the delivery of a package.

The police statement on Monday indicated that the incident occurred while Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Ikwechegh. A dispute reportedly arose over the method of delivery, leading to the physical assault.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted,” the statement read.

The police also expressed concern over Ikwechegh’s alleged dismissive attitude towards law enforcement during the incident.

The lawmaker reportedly made a remark about the Inspector General of Police, stating, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” after allegedly slapping the driver, demonstrating a troubling disregard for authority.

The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter, assuring that justice will be served.

“The Command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring justice in all cases. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken,” the statement concluded.

Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
