A Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, a major city in south-west Nigeria and the capital of Oyo State, has set aside the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention held in the city on Saturday, 15 November 2025.
The court, which is part of Nigeria’s federal judicial system, also stopped Kabiru Turaki, a Nigerian politician linked to the faction that emerged from the gathering, and others from presenting themselves as national officers of the PDP.
Okay News reports that the ruling is the latest development in a series of internal disagreements that have split the PDP into rival blocs, triggering court cases over leadership claims and how the party conducts its national processes.
Despite the disputes, the party proceeded with a widely publicised two-day 2025 Elective National Convention at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Adamasingba, Ibadan. The event, promoted with the hashtag #Ibadan2025, drew large crowds of delegates, party leaders and supporters.
Following the judgment on Friday, 30 January 2026, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, a party spokesperson in Nigeria’s opposition group, reacted in a statement posted on the party’s X account, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
He said the party was waiting for the final decision of the appellate courts, insisting the PDP believes those courts will uphold its position. He also urged members to stay calm, saying there was “absolutely no cause for alarm,” and adding that the party’s “rebirth movement” remained on course.
“Notwithstanding this judgment, the Kabiru Turaki–led Peoples Democratic Party, which emerged from the Ibadan Convention, remains legally intact and unshaken as we await the authoritative pronouncement of the appellate courts,” the statement said.
He added: “We therefore urge our members to remain resolute and committed, as there is absolutely no cause for alarm. The rebirth movement remains firmly on course.”
As the matter moves to the appellate courts, party members and observers will be watching closely for a definitive ruling that could influence the PDP’s direction ahead of future political activities in Nigeria.
