Abuja, NIGERIA – The Federal Government of Nigeria on Monday convened an emergency stakeholders’ meeting with the management of Dangote Refinery, regulatory agencies, and major downstream oil marketing associations to hammer out immediate reductions in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) nationwide.
The strategic session, hosted at the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) headquarters in Abuja, served as a direct regulatory response to the recent steady decline in global crude oil benchmarks. Okay News reports that the dialogue brought together key industry organs including the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), IPMAN, PETROAN, MEMAN, DAPPMAN, NARTO, and major retail operators like TotalEnergies and Matrix Energy.
The intervention follows an explicit directive from the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, who warned operators that the downstream deregulation policy must not be used as a shield for consumer exploitation or corporate profiteering. Lokpobiri emphasized that since international Brent crude prices have dropped, the economic relief must immediately translate to cheaper domestic retail costs for petrol and diesel, given their massive inflationary impact on the general populace.
Corroborating the minister’s stance, NMDPRA Chief Executive Rabiu Abdullahi Umar stated that the regulatory parley was crucial to enforcing cost-reflective pricing models that mirror realistic market dynamics. The regulatory authority urged collaborative frameworks across domestic inventory logistics, transparent pricing templates, and national strategic fuel reserves to ensure that ongoing structural reliefs in global oil trading are felt directly by Nigerian consumers at the pumps.
