The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and filed for a court injunction to stop the planned marriage of 100 orphans in Niger State.

The Speaker of Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, had announced plans to sponsor the wedding of 100 girls, including some orphaned by insurgency, as part of his constituency project.

The minister expressed concerns about the welfare of the orphans and the potential consequences of early marriage, including poverty, inequality, and gender-based violence. She advocated for education and empowerment as alternatives to early marriage, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the girls’ development and future prospects.

The ministry has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the planned marriage and is seeking to ensure the girls’ ages, consent, and preparedness for the union. The minister has also pledged to take responsibility for the girls’ education and vocational training.
