The Federal Government has directed all vice-chancellors of federal universities to begin immediate enforcement of the “no work, no pay” policy against members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) currently on strike.

The directive was issued through a circular dated October 13, 2025, signed by Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, and circulated to all relevant education and finance authorities.

According to the circular, the decision aligns with provisions of Nigeria’s Labour Laws, which stipulate that employees who abstain from their duties during industrial action are not entitled to remuneration.

“In line with the provisions of the Labour Laws of the Federation, the Federal Government reiterates its position on the enforcement of the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy in respect of any employee who fails to discharge his or her official duties during the period of strike action,” the circular reads.

Okay News reports that ASUU members embarked on the current strike over the government’s failure to fulfil long-standing agreements, including issues of unpaid academic allowances, revitalisation funds, and salary structure adjustments.

The circular was also copied to several key government offices, including the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Director-General of the Budget Office, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities, Accountant-General of the Federation, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
