Abuja, NIGERIA – The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to the welfare of military veterans, promising sustained institutional support for retired personnel who served to protect the country’s sovereignty.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, gave the assurance during a meeting with a delegation from the National Council of the Nigerian Legion in Abuja. Okay News reports that the government has pledged to review the challenges faced by retired personnel under the administration’s development agenda.
During the visit, the Chairman of the National Council of the Nigerian Legion, Ms. Grace Morenike Henry, advocated for legislative amendments to modernize the decades-old Nigerian Legion Act. She also proposed the establishment of a dedicated Federal Ministry of Veterans Affairs to streamline pensions, medical care, and reintegration programs, aligning Nigeria with international standards.
Supporting the call for modernization, the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, noted that the growing population of retired military personnel requires updated legislation. The government has promised to evaluate these proposals in coordination with relevant ministries and departments to improve living standards for veterans and families of fallen heroes.
