The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a groundbreaking housing initiative aimed at addressing the country’s persistent housing deficit by delivering 77,400 social housing units across the nation. This ambitious project is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda and includes the launch of new Renewed Hope Cities in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano.

Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Ata, disclosed the details in a recent statement. He emphasized the ministry’s core mission, saying, “The primary mandate of the ministry is to provide mass housing for Nigerians, and we welcome potential collaboration with Ms Allen Le and Partners International Investment Consulting Joint Company in achieving this goal.”

Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the government plans to construct 3,000 housing units each in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano as part of the new cities. Additionally, 250 housing units will be built in each of Nigeria’s 36 states to form Estates, broadening the reach of the initiative.

Ata further revealed the nationwide rollout of the social housing scheme, stating, “Additionally, the social housing initiative will deliver 77,400 housing units, 100 in each of the 774 local government areas.” This expansive approach aims to ensure equitable housing access across all regions.

Highlighting the government’s inclusive policy, the minister announced, “30 per cent of the 77,400 social housing units will be given to the non-income Nigerians,” commending President Tinubu for maintaining this quota despite proposals to reduce it to 20 per cent.

During discussions with a visiting delegation led by Allen Ke Nam of SV-NED Incorporated, which expressed interest in investing in affordable housing, Ata stressed the need for clear collaboration frameworks: “We need to know specifically how we will partner with you. Make a formal proposal to the ministry indicating where you want to collaborate with us. We look forward to seeing clearly the areas where you want us to come in.”

Nam requested government land to facilitate investment and highlighted the socioeconomic benefits, including job creation and skills acquisition through new construction methods. The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Shuaib Belgore, welcomed the partnership and assured full support.

This initiative marks a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to provide affordable housing and stimulate economic development through strategic partnerships and large-scale construction projects.
