A popular fruit market in Gombe was said to have been destroyed by fire yesterday.

Chairman of the market Mallam Aminu Uba told newsmen that the incident happened at 12:00 mid night when people were already asleep.

According to him, the disaster came when some shop owners were unable to switch off their appliances before living the business place.

He said during the disaster no fewer than 12 shops were affected and called on the people to always switch off their appliances before living their business places.

The chairman appealed to government as matter of urgency to assist the victims to enable them gain back their loses.

He said arrangement has been concluded to discuss with the public on how to sustain the market by taking drastic measures to ensure that the market is secured without any harm.

Meanwhile, Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo was at the scene of the incident to see things for himself and sympathized with the victims and promised that necessary action would be taken to ensure that every victim be assisted.

He called on them to be vigilant and maintain their place of businesses in order to avoid future occurrence.
