First News online newspaper has issued an apology to the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, for a news story published on January 29, 2024, which contained “falsehoods and fabricated stories.” The story, written by editor Segun Olatunji, alleged that Gbajabiamila attempted to corner $30bn and linked him to 66 houses traced to Sabiu.

The management of First News stated that they relied on a misleading source and were negligent in publishing the story. They tendered an unreserved apology to Gbajabiamila and retracted the story, stating that they have no malicious intent towards him or his office.

The apology comes after Olatunji was arrested and detained by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) in March, sparking widespread condemnation from media organizations and advocacy groups. The case was later settled out of court.

The incident has raised concerns about press freedom and the safety of journalists in Nigeria, with many calling for greater protection and respect for media professionals.
