At least five people have died after a Mexican Navy aircraft on a humanitarian mission crashed near Galveston, Texas, in foggy conditions.

The plane was transporting a child receiving treatment for severe burns when it went down in Galveston Bay close to Scholes International Airport.

Flight tracking data shows the aircraft disappeared from radar shortly after mid-afternoon local time. Mexico’s Navy confirmed that one person is still missing, while two others were rescued alive. The flight was operating on behalf of the Michou y Mau Foundation, a charity that supports Mexican children with serious burn injuries.

Search and rescue efforts were carried out jointly by Mexican authorities and the US Coast Guard, with divers working in poor visibility. The foundation expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, as investigations continue into the cause of the crash.
