Raphael Varane, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid defender, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31, Okay.ng reports.

Varane, who joined Manchester United in 2021 after a stellar career with Real Madrid, faced several injury challenges during his time at Old Trafford, hindering his ability to maintain consistent form. Most recently, a serious knee injury during his debut for Serie A side Como last month forced him to be left out of the squad.

In a heartfelt statement posted on Wednesday, Varane expressed his pride in his career and the decision to retire.

“They say all good things must come to an end,” Varane wrote. “In my career, I have taken on many challenges, risen to the occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible. Incredible emotions, special moments, and memories that will last a lifetime. Reflecting on these moments, it is with immense pride and a feeling of fulfilment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love.”

The French defender, who won numerous titles including the Champions League with Real Madrid and the World Cup with France, expressed his desire to retire at his best, rather than holding on despite physical challenges.

“I hold myself to the highest standard. I want to go out strong, not just hold on to the game. It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instincts. Desire and needs are two different things. I have fallen and risen a thousand times, and this time, it’s the moment to stop and hang my boots up with my final game-winning trophy at Wembley.”

Varane also reflected on his journey from Lens to Madrid, Manchester, and representing France, saying, “I have defended every badge with everything I have and loved every minute of the journey.” He emphasized that the experience of playing at the highest level is unmatched, both physically and mentally, and that athletes are never fully satisfied, always striving for more success.
