Former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to dedicate his efforts to a newly launched platform, the Northern Star Youth Empowerment Initiative (NSYEI).

Bafarawa, who served two terms as Sokoto State governor, submitted his resignation letter to the PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagun, on January 8, 2025, and it was formally received by the party’s national office on January 13, 2025.

In his letter, which was shared with journalists in Sokoto, Bafarawa explained that his decision to leave the PDP was to avoid a conflict of interest between his political affiliations and his leadership of the youth-focused non-governmental organization.

“I will now focus my attention on creating awareness for youth entrepreneurship and empowerment initiatives aimed at making them self-productive, reducing redundancy, and fostering self-reliance,” Bafarawa wrote.

He expressed his goodwill toward the PDP, stating: “I wish the People’s Democratic Party and its leadership the very best in all their future endeavours. I appreciate the opportunity given to me to contribute my quota to the development of the party as a card-carrying member.”

The Northern Star Youth Empowerment Initiative, co-founded by Bafarawa in late 2024 and launched at Arewa House, Kaduna, aims to address youth unemployment and promote self-reliance through entrepreneurship and skills acquisition.

Bafarawa was a prominent figure in the PDP, playing a significant role in the re-election of Sokoto Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in 2019. His influence within the party grew following his split with his former political mentor, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wammako, also known as Sarkin Yamman Sokoto.
