French President Emmanuel Macron says France will deepen its security partnership with Nigeria following a conversation with President Bola Tinubu, citing the growing threat of terrorism and instability in the northern region.
Macron shared the update in a message posted on his official X account, outlining France’s position on the worsening security challenges facing the country.
Okay News reports that the French leader framed the issue as one requiring international responsibility.
Macron said he assured Tinubu of France’s “solidarity in the face of the various security challenges, particularly the terrorist threat in the North.”
He noted that the request for increased cooperation came directly from the Nigerian president, who has continued to push for broader global engagement as violence escalates across parts of the country.
According to Macron, France is ready to strengthen its work with Nigerian authorities and expand its support for communities affected by insecurity.
He urged other partners to increase their involvement, saying that the fight against terrorism in the region demands a collective response.
In his words, “I spoke with President Tinubu of Nigeria. I conveyed France’s solidarity in the face of the various security challenges, particularly the terrorist threat in the North. At his request, we will strengthen our partnership with the authorities and our support for the affected populations. We call on all our partners to step up their engagement. No one can remain a spectator.”
The message comes as Nigeria continues to face deadly attacks linked to insurgent groups and criminal networks operating across parts of the North, a crisis that has strained local resources and drawn attention from international allies.
