In a swift response to the political crisis in Rivers State, President Bola Tinubu has appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd.) as the administrator of the oil-rich state, following the six-month suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu.
Born on September 27, 1960, in Nko, Cross River State, Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd.) brings a wealth of leadership experience to his new role. As the former Chief of Naval Staff from 2015 to 2021, he stewarded Nigeria’s maritime forces through challenging times, combining strategic insight with operational excellence.
Ibas’s remarkable journey began in humble settings. After attending Nko Primary School and later Big Qua Primary School in Calabar, he pursued his education at the prestigious Hope Waddell Training Institute. His military career commenced in 1979 when he joined the Nigerian Defence Academy as part of the 26 Regular Course, eventually being commissioned as a sub-lieutenant in 1983.
His educational pursuit didn’t stop at military training. Ibas acquired a master’s degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from Pakistan’s Quaid-i-Azam University, complementing his tactical knowledge with strategic thinking. This academic foundation, coupled with specialized training in underwater warfare and amphibious operations from institutions in India and the United States, shaped his multifaceted approach to security challenges.
Rising through the ranks, Ibas held numerous command positions, including leading the Nigerian Navy Underwater Warfare School and the Forward Operating Base in Ibaka. His administrative acumen was evident in his roles as Naval Provost Marshal, Navy Secretary, and Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command.
His appointment as Chief of Naval Staff in 2015 marked the pinnacle of his naval career, where he oversaw significant modernization efforts and operational successes against maritime threats. After retiring from active service in 2021, he remained influential in national security circles.
Now, as Rivers State Administrator, Ibas faces perhaps his most challenging assignment yet: navigating the turbulent political waters of Rivers State. His decades of experience in military discipline, strategic planning, and crisis management will be tested as he works to restore stability in a state known for its complex political landscape and economic significance.
With President Tinubu emphasizing the need for restored order and democratic progress, all eyes are on Admiral Ibas as he takes the helm in Port Harcourt, tasked with steering Rivers State through this unprecedented period of administrative transition.
