FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried arrested in Bahamas on US request

By Muhammad A. Aliyu

Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of the now-collapsed cryptocurrency exchange platform FTX, was arrested in the Bahamas on Monday.

According to reports, Bankman-Fried was arrested by local police at the request of American authorities and faces likely extradition to the United States.

The United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, confirmed the arrest in a tweet on Tuesday, stating: “Earlier this evening, Bahamian authorities arrested Samuel Bankman-Fried at the request of the U.S. Government, based on a sealed indictment filed by the SDNY. We expect to move to unseal the indictment in the morning and will have more to say at that time.”

FTX, which Bankman-Fried used to lead as CEO, filed for bankruptcy in the United States in November. Following the filing, Bankman-Fried stepped down from his position at the company.
