Full List of Smartphones that won’t Support WhatsApp in 2025

By Yusuf Abubakar

WhatsApp has announced that it will no longer support certain older smartphones starting from January 1, 2025, as part of its regular updates to improve functionality and security.

This update will primarily affect devices with outdated operating systems (OS) that are no longer compatible with WhatsApp’s latest features.

Both the regular WhatsApp application and WhatsApp Business will be impacted.

Users are advised to check their device compatibility and update their OS if possible. If an OS update is not available for their device, users may need to upgrade to a newer smartphone to continue using the app.

Key Dates:

  • January 1, 2025: Support ends for Android KitKat (OS 4.4) and earlier versions.
  • May 5, 2025: Support ends for iOS versions earlier than 15.1, affecting older iPhones.

Full List of Affected Devices

Android Phones:

Devices running Android KitKat OS (4.4) or older will no longer support WhatsApp. While not all devices are listed, the following are among the popular smartphones likely to lose access if their OS cannot be updated:

  1. Samsung Galaxy S3
  2. Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  3. HTC One X
  4. Sony Xperia Arc S
  5. LG Optimus G
  6. Motorola Droid Razr
  7. Huawei Ascend P1

The following Apple devices will no longer support WhatsApp as they are unable to upgrade beyond iOS 12.5.7:

  1. iPhone 5s
  2. iPhone 6
  3. iPhone 6 Plus

What Users Can Do:

  1. Check Your Operating System:
    • For Android users: Go to Settings > About Phone > Software Information to see your current OS version.
    • For iPhone users: Go to Settings > General > About to check your iOS version.
  2. Update Your OS:
    • Android users: If your device is running KitKat, check if an update to a more recent OS is available.
    • iPhone users: Update to iOS 15.1 or higher if your device supports it.
  3. Upgrade Your Device:
    • If your phone is no longer eligible for OS updates, consider upgrading to a newer model that supports WhatsApp’s requirements.

Meta’s Statement:

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, emphasized that the changes are aimed at improving the app’s performance, introducing new features, and ensuring user security.

“Regular updates to app compatibility are necessary to ensure the highest level of functionality and security for our users,” Meta said in a statement.

For users affected by these changes, upgrading or updating their device will ensure continued access to WhatsApp, one of the world’s most popular messaging platforms.
