ABUJA, Nigeria – A coalition of 100 citizens known as the G-100 issued an open letter on Sunday, August 2, 2026, demanding that opposition leaders unite behind a single presidential candidate to contest against Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, in the 2027 general election.
Okay News reports that the G-100 will convene a National Council of Opposition Leaders within two weeks to question potential candidates on their motivations. The coalition stated in the letter, “Within the next two weeks, we shall convene a National Council of Opposition Leaders, where every candidate’s ambition shall be summoned before the bar of patriotism and every man or woman shall be asked a single question: whether he or she seeks to contest the 2027 elections for himself or herself, or the salvation of Nigeria.”
The open letter, titled “The Doctrine of a Necessary Democratic Opposition,” was addressed to prominent political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and former Senate President David Mark. The document was signed by individuals such as former National Vice Chairman Northwest of the All Progressives Congress, Salihu Moh. Lukman, former federal lawmaker Nnena Ukeje, and former Kogi State Deputy Governor Simon Achuba.
The group attributed the current crisis in the country to structural issues rather than purely economic or political factors. “We have fashioned a political order that too often rewards loyalty over merit, patronage over service, and power over accountability,” the coalition said. The signatories added that “no people have ever repaired their economy while neglecting the condition of their politics.”
The coalition referenced the historical actions of the G34 group against military rule and the Doctrine of Necessity invoked during the illness of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. The group said, “Democracies rarely perish in a single day. They decay when opposition becomes disorganised, when citizens become indifferent, and when ambition triumphs over principle.”
The planned council aims to build on a previous agreement among political actors. “We shall reaffirm the spirit and purpose of the Ibadan Declaration of April 2026, and from that common foundation establish a new and honourable course towards the adoption of a single presidential standard-bearer for the democratic opposition,” the group said. The coalition also directed appeals to civil society organizations, professional groups, clergy members, and labour leaders to participate in the political process.
