Libreville, Gabon – Authorities in Gabon have suspended access to several social media platforms, citing threats to national security and social cohesion.
Okay News reports that the decision was announced by the country’s media regulator, the High Authority for Communication (HAC), which ordered the immediate restriction “until further notice.” The agency accused some digital platforms and activists of spreading content described as inappropriate, defamatory, hateful and abusive, allegedly in violation of Gabonese laws. However, officials did not specify which particular posts or incidents prompted the action.
Internet monitoring group NetBlocks stated that access to services owned by Meta, as well as YouTube and TikTok, had been restricted. Reports indicated that Facebook, Instagram and X were still accessible as of Wednesday afternoon. A government spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.
Reacting to the move, civil society member Nicaise Moulombi warned that the suspension could disrupt economic and social activities, especially amid rising unemployment and living costs. He noted that social networks now serve as tools for business, communication, innovation and civic engagement, beyond mere entertainment.
