Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the former governor of Kano, has shed light on his absence from the inauguration ceremony of his successor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

In an interview with BBC Hausa, Ganduje explained that his nonattendance was due to the fact that he and his successor were affiliated with different political parties.

Concerned about potential clashes between their supporters, he made the decision to prioritize stability during the event.

On Monday, Abba Kabir Yusuf was officially sworn in as the 19th governor of Kano in a grand ceremony held at the Sani Abacha stadium.

However, while the eyes of the nation were focused on the transfer of power, Ganduje was absent, having traveled to Abuja to attend the inauguration of Bola Tinubu as president.

Ganduje clarified his absence, stating, “The inauguration ceremony is composed of two components. The first is the handover of documents detailing the state’s governance, including completed and ongoing projects. The second aspect is the swearing-in ceremony, as you witnessed.” He further explained, “Given that the outgoing and incoming governors belong to different political parties, it is not necessary for the former governor to attend the inauguration ceremony. Sometimes, clashes between supporters can erupt if this is not avoided.”

Emphasizing his commitment to a peaceful transition of power, Ganduje expressed his desire to prevent any potential chaos or unrest during the ceremony.

His decision to attend Tinubu’s inauguration instead was based on his political alignment and the desire to support his fellow party member.

In regards to rumors of a potential appointment in President Tinubu’s cabinet, Ganduje clarified, “I am not actively seeking any appointment. However, if such an opportunity arises, I would consider it.”

Ganduje extended his well-wishes to Tinubu, highlighting their shared commitment to democratic values. “I wish him well and will continue to pray to Allah for his success. People voted for him based on the belief that he would replicate the accomplishments he achieved as governor of Lagos State. His victory is also our victory because we supported him,” Ganduje affirmed.
