Samreboi, GHANA – Tragedy has struck the Ghana Premier League as Berekum Chelsea winger Dominic Frimpong was killed during an armed robbery on the team’s bus on Sunday, April 12, 2026.
Okay News gathered that the 20-year-old rising star lost his life when the team was ambushed while returning from an away fixture against Samartex in Samreboi.
The attack occurred on the Goaso–Bibiani road when a group of masked gunmen blocked the path of the team bus.
According to a statement from the club, the assailants opened fire with assault rifles as the driver attempted to reverse the vehicle to safety. In the ensuing chaos, players and coaching staff were forced to flee into nearby bushes to seek cover from the gunfire.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed “profound shock and deep sorrow” over the incident, describing Frimpong as a promising talent whose passion embodied the spirit of the league. This is not the first time a team has been targeted on this route; a similar attack occurred in 2023 involving Legon Cities, though no injuries were reported in that instance.
The GFA has vowed to strengthen security arrangements for all clubs traveling for domestic competitions to prevent a recurrence of such a devastating loss. Meanwhile, the global football community has begun paying tribute to the young winger, whose death cast a dark shadow over the weekend’s sporting activities in West Africa.
The security situation for sports teams in the region is becoming a major talking point.
