Google today marks the 20th anniversary of Google Maps, celebrating two decades of transforming how people navigate and explore the world.

From providing directions to enriching everyday experiences, Google Maps has grown into a platform used by over 2 billion people monthly, making it an indispensable tool for users worldwide.

Over the years, Google Maps has evolved far beyond a basic mapping tool. It is now a dynamic, interactive platform offering a wide array of features.

Users can ask Gemini-powered Maps for tailored travel ideas, explore airports using the “Directory” tab, or rely on augmented reality to quickly understand their surroundings.

Everyday tasks, such as finding the nearest affordable petrol station or reviewing popular local spots, have become easier and more intuitive thanks to Google Maps.

Reflecting on its impact, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications and Public Affairs Manager for Google West Africa, highlighted the platform’s evolution and significance in Nigeria.

“Google Maps has evolved from a basic mapping tool to a dynamic platform that helps people explore, navigate, and discover new experiences. The top reviewed locations in Nigeria highlight the places that have captured the interest and attention of our users,” Kola-Ogunlade said.
