Google Fixes Search Ranking Bug After Four Days of Disruptions

By Yusuf Abubakar

Google has resolved a search ranking bug that caused significant disruptions for some websites over the past four days.

The issue, which first surfaced on August 16, 2024, led to fluctuating search rankings, with some websites temporarily disappearing from search results.

The bug was officially confirmed and acknowledged by Google early on August 16 at around 1:48 am ET.

After days of investigation, Google announced that the bug had been fixed as of August 20, 2024, at 8:10 am ET. The company described the problem as a “very narrow issue” that impacted a “small number of websites.”

Google assured that the affected sites should no longer experience these ranking fluctuations.

The bug’s resolution comes as a relief to the affected site owners, who had been experiencing ranking disruptions since last Friday.

Google’s quick response and resolution of the issue are crucial in maintaining the reliability of its search platform, especially as it continues to implement broader updates like the August 2024 core update.

For those who noticed ranking issues during this period, Google confirmed that the issue was unrelated to the ongoing core update, which is intended to surface more small and independent sites in search results.
