Google Introduces AVIF Support for Search

By Yusuf Abubakar

Google has officially announced that it now supports the AVIF image format in Google Search, a move expected to significantly enhance the performance and quality of images displayed in search results.

AVIF, short for AV1 Image File Format, is an image format derived from the AV1 video compression standard.

This format is increasingly favored due to its ability to deliver high-quality images at reduced file sizes, which can improve website load times and user experience.

The update, announced on August 30, 2024, means that AVIF images will now be indexed by Google Search automatically, without requiring any additional configuration from website owners.

This change applies to all areas within Google Search that utilize images, including Google Images.

AVIF’s adoption has been steadily growing across the web, with support from major browsers and platforms like WordPress, Joomla, and CloudFlare.

The format offers several advantages over traditional formats like JPEG and PNG, including better compression, support for a wider color gamut, and the ability to handle HDR images and alpha transparency.

These features make AVIF an attractive option for web developers looking to optimize visual content.
