Google has released its top search trends, highlighting a captivating blend of politics, pop culture, and curiosity that swept across Nigeria’s digital landscape in the first quarter of 2023.

As expected, the general elections dominated the political landscape, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) emerging as the most searched entity between January and March.

The search for political figures was intense, with Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, capturing the top spot.

This is surprising, considering that Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president-elect of Nigeria, was expected to dominate the searches. Atiku Abubakar, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, claimed the fifth position.

In the music industry, homegrown talent took center stage, with Spyro’s ‘Who is your guy?’ taking the top spot. Ruger’s ‘Asiwaju’ and ‘Carry me go’ by Boy Spyce and Khaid secured second and third places, respectively.

Nigerians’ love for homegrown music was evident in the search trends, and it is clear that the Nigerian music industry continues to thrive.

The top trending questions on Google were also very interesting. Nigerians were curious about a wide range of topics, from the date of Easter in 2023 to how to check their polling units.

The popularity of Spyro’s song also sparked the question ‘Who is your guy?’, which further demonstrated the impact of the music industry on Nigerian pop culture.

Here are the complete lists of top trending searches reflecting the diverse interests of Nigerians during the first quarter of the year:

Google gathers search trend data by analyzing what Nigerians are searching for and asking on their search engine platform.

With over 40,000 search queries processed per second, this amounts to over a billion daily searches and 1.2 trillion searches annually worldwide.
