Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has opposed the recent suggestion by former Chief of Army Staff, General Theophilus Danjuma, urging Nigerians to defend themselves amid rising insecurity.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Governor Namadi cautioned that such advice could plunge the country into chaos. “He (Danjuma) is a very senior security person, and should be respected. But if he says that citizens should be allowed to defend themselves, I think you are causing anarchy. His words need to be analysed carefully,” Namadi stated.

The governor emphasized ongoing government efforts to strengthen security, referencing Jigawa’s recent deployment of over 9,900 security guards to protect residents and infrastructure as part of a broader 12-point agenda. He highlighted community engagement and strategic planning as effective tools in reducing violence.

“We have not reached the level where people need to defend themselves,” Namadi added, stressing the importance of dialogue and non-violent conflict resolution.

Namadi also reiterated his support for the establishment of State Police, noting that discussions are ongoing at the National Economic Council.

General Danjuma, at a public event in Taraba State, had insisted, “Nigerians must rise and defend themselves,” arguing that reliance on government protection is no longer realistic.
