Borneo State Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has ordered the inclusion of vocational skills in over 2,775 Sangaya centers—commonly referred to as Almajiri schools in the northern region of Nigeria—and 451 Islamiyya Schools throughout the State.

When the Governing Council of Arabic and Sangaya Education Board provided Zulum an update on the validation and registration of Sangaya schools in Borno State, Zulum gave the order yesterday at the Government House.

In order to qualify Sangaya school products for admission to colleges and universities, the Governor highlighted that Borno State Government wants to streamline the informal and formal education system with the introduction of vocational education, numeracy, and literacy skills.

Zulum further noted that the inclusion of vocational education will contribute to a decrease in the number of Almajiri wandering the streets in all regions of the State and children who are not enrolled in school.

Earlier, Khalifa Ahmad Abulfatahi, the chairman of the Arabic and Sangaya Education Board, presented the results of the validation and registration of Sangaya schools that were carried out throughout the state’s 27 local government districts, with the exception of Kala-Balge, Guzamala, and Abadam.

He said that the board had 12,309 teachers and 224,068 students registered in 2,775 Sanjaya centers. 128,789 of the 224,068 students are day students, while 97,279 are boarding students.
