Green Africa, the Lagos-based value airline, has marked a significant milestone by acquiring its first owned aircraft, an ATR 72-500 registered as 5N-GAB. This acquisition, partly funded by a Naira debt facility from Access Bank, signals a crucial step in the airline’s mission to expand affordable and reliable air travel across Nigeria and West Africa.

The incoming aircraft, manufacturer’s serial number 852, is poised to enter service following customary regulatory approvals. This development comes at a pivotal time for Green Africa, which launched amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and has since established a reputation for punctuality and affordability.

“We are pleased to acquire our very first aircraft, another significant milestone for Green Africa,” stated Babawande Afolabi, Founder and CEO of Green Africa. “This incoming aircraft will be pivotal as we thoughtfully navigate the next phase of our journey to bring safe, affordable, and reliable air travel to a broader group of customers in the region.”

Access Bank’s support highlights the financial institution’s commitment to fostering growth in promising Nigerian businesses. Roosevelt Ogbonna, Managing Director and CEO of Access Bank, emphasized, “As one of the largest and leading financial institutions on the continent, Access Bank takes special pride in supporting young businesses that have the potential to redefine their industries and act as major catalysts for positive impact in their local market and on the continent at large. We are impressed with the Green Africa story and excited about the brand’s future trajectory. We are delighted to support the acquisition of Green Africa’s very first owned aircraft.”

For many Nigerians, air travel remains an aspiration. Green Africa aims to bridge this gap, connecting communities and contributing to economic development. “From my experience covering the growth of the Nigerian aviation industry, I’ve seen how essential affordable air travel can be for regional economies,” I can attest. “Green Africa’s expansion could significantly impact connectivity and trade.”

Looking ahead, Green Africa plans to enhance connectivity within Nigeria and expand its reach across the West African seaboard. The acquisition of its first owned aircraft represents a tangible step towards realizing this vision, positioning the airline as a key player in the region’s aviation landscape.

Green Africa’s growth trajectory, supported by strategic financial partnerships like the one with Access Bank, underscores the potential for sustainable and accessible air travel in Africa.
