Damaturu, NIGERIA – A grassroots fundraising initiative in Yobe State has raised approximately ₦188 million to support the 2027 governorship ambition of former Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.
Okay News gathered that the fundraiser, held on Sunday in Damaturu, was organized by the Coalition of Yobe East Progressive Youths. The funds, consisting of cash donations and pledges, are intended for the purchase of Lawan’s nomination and expression of interest forms under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Lawan, who currently represents Yobe North in the Senate and served as the President of the 9th Senate, expressed his appreciation for the initiative through a statement by his media aide, Ezrel Tabiowo, on Monday, April 6, 2026. The former presidential aspirant described the drive as a demonstration of “responsible citizenship” and collective ownership of the political process.
According to the statement, the donations reflected a broad spectrum of grassroots support, with many contributions ranging from as little as ₦100 to ₦3,000. Lawan noted that the donors included widows, students, traders, and mechanic apprentices, emphasizing that the support represents an investment in a vision for an accountable and transparent government in Yobe State.
“My desire to serve is to answer the call of our people,” Lawan was quoted as saying. The move marks a significant early entry into the 2027 gubernatorial race in Yobe, as political realignments continue to intensify across the country.
