Akure, Nigeria – Suspected kidnappers have invaded a health facility in Akure, abducting several medical personnel in a late-night attack that has heightened fears over insecurity in the area.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday at a clinic located in Oke-Ijebu, within Ondo State. According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen arrived at about 2:00 a.m. in a vehicle, initially posing as people responding to an emergency. It was only after they began issuing orders at gunpoint that the situation became clear, as they forced all health workers on duty, including interns, into their vehicle and fled the scene.
Okay News reports that the attack has triggered anxiety among residents, many of whom are already concerned about the growing wave of insecurity across the state. Patients at the facility were reportedly left unharmed during the operation.
In a swift response, the Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun, launched a rescue operation and successfully freed five of the abducted victims. The corps’ commander, Adetunji Adeleye, confirmed that the victims were rescued around 4:30 a.m. by its Rapid Response Squad and are currently receiving medical attention.
The security outfit also disclosed that it rescued two additional victims—a man and his teenage son—who were abducted earlier along the Oda-Akure Road the same day, underscoring the scale of security challenges in the region.
