Gunmen suspected to be armed bandits have launched a deadly attack on a National Park Service Office in Oloka, a rural community in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, located in southwestern Nigeria.
According to security sources, the attack happened at about 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 6 January 2026, when the assailants reportedly stormed the facility and opened fire. As a result, unconfirmed reports indicated that about five personnel of the National Park Service lost their lives during the incident.
The National Park Service is a federal agency under Nigeria’s Ministry of Environment, responsible for protecting wildlife reserves and forest resources across the country. Therefore, the attack has raised serious concerns about security around protected forest zones in Oyo State.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, said security agencies had responded swiftly. Oyo State is one of Nigeria’s key agricultural and cultural hubs in the southwest.
He said, “Yes, there was an attack by yet to be identified men against the men of the National Park. The Commissioner of Police and other service chiefs are currently on their way to the location.”
He further explained that security reinforcements had already been mobilized to prevent further violence in the area.
“Meanwhile, the CP Femi Haruna has deployed tactical teams, Mobile Police Force officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit to the affected area to prevent further breakdown of law and order,” he added.
Meanwhile, Okay News reports that residents in nearby communities have expressed fear following the incident, while security agencies continue to assess the situation and gather intelligence.
As investigations continue, authorities have promised to provide more updates as soon as verified details become available.
