Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has hinted that the Spanish giants could sign veteran striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in January.

Ibrahimovic, 35, is being released by Manchester United after picking up a serious knee injury in April and is not expected to be fully fit until the new year.

That would tie in nicely with Atletico, who are unable to sign new players until January due to a transfer ban.

When asked about the Swede, Cerezo said: “We have spoken with his family, but not with him.

“A lot of things can happen between now and January. We’ll speak with Ibrahimovic in January, but right now we can’t sign anyone.”

One player, however, who will not be leaving Atletico this summer is Saul Niguez.

The 22-year-old Spanish striker, who scored a hat-trick against Italy in the European Under-21 Championship semi-finals on Tuesday, had emerged as a potential target for Barcelona but Cerezo was having none of it.

“Saul is a very good player and he has a long-term contract at Atletico,” Cerezo said.

“Are you going to ask me about him every summer? We’ll put up with it.

“I don’t think he has any agreements with other clubs, or anything like that. Saul is at Atleti, and he won’t be going anywhere.”
