Abuja, NIGERIA — The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has initiated a structural overhaul of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to address security gaps and reinforce internal discipline. During an emergency conference at the Force Headquarters on Tuesday, the IGP addressed senior strategic managers, including AIGs and Commissioners, emphasizing that the modern security landscape requires a “responsive, accountable, and intelligence-driven” approach.
IGP Disu addressed the recent extra-judicial killing in Delta State, confirming the immediate dismissal and criminal prosecution of the officers involved. He asserted that the NPF maintains a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct, declaring that no officer is shielded from the law. This commitment to justice coincides with the 2026 World Press Freedom Day commemorations, where the Federal Government reaffirmed the need for transparency in governance and law enforcement.
Okay News reports that the IGP also unveiled a significant monthly performance record, citing the arrest of 28 suspected terrorists and the rescue of 189 kidnapped victims in April 2026 alone.
The centerpiece of the conference was the announcement of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU). This newly established tactical formation is designed to replace outdated response models with a system built on intelligence-based deployment and strict human rights compliance. Unlike previous tactical squads, the VCRU places direct oversight responsibility on state Commissioners of Police, ensuring a clear chain of accountability. The IGP further mandated that these Commissioners must engage in regular town hall meetings and make their direct contact details available to community leaders to bridge the trust gap between the public and the police.
