JOS, Nigeria – The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has undertaken an operational visit to Plateau State to personally assess the security situation following the March 29 attack in the Angwan Rukuba community of Jos North.
Okay News gathered that during his visit on Friday, the IGP paid a courtesy call to Governor Caleb Mutfwang to commiserate with the people of the state before proceeding to the site of the attack for an on-the-spot assessment. Disu revealed that a robust response had already been activated, involving the deployment of the DIG in charge of Operations, the AIG of the Police Mobile Force, and eight additional tactical units. He noted that the situation has been significantly de-escalated through these coordinated efforts and ongoing engagement with community leaders and youth groups.
“Sustained operations will continue until normalcy is fully restored,” the IGP emphasized. He also issued a stern warning to the youth in Jos against taking the law into their own hands, stating that any form of reprisal or vigilantism would only undermine peace efforts and escalate tensions.
Governor Mutfwang commended the Nigeria Police Force for its prompt response but used the opportunity to advocate for structural security reforms. The Governor highlighted the need for the establishment of State Police to enhance operational efficiency and recommended the acquisition of modern tools, such as night surveillance drones with infrared capabilities.
While pledging continued logistical support to the police, Governor Mutfwang pointed out that vast terrain, manpower demands, and the distance between armouries remain significant challenges. The IGP assured the Governor that he would brief President Bola Tinubu on the current security situation as part of ongoing national coordination efforts, while urging residents to remain calm and support security agencies with credible information.
