IGP Orders Police Officers Nationwide to Wear Black Bands in Honour of Late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja

By Muhammad A. Aliyu

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed all police officers across the country to wear black bands for a seven-day mourning period in tribute to the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja.

The directive follows President Bola Tinubu’s announcement on Wednesday of Lagbaja’s passing at age 56 after a battle with an undisclosed illness.

In addition to the mourning directive, the Federal Government has ordered that the national flag be flown at half-mast for the seven-day period in recognition of Lagbaja’s contributions to national security. Appointed as Chief of Army Staff by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023, Lagbaja was widely respected for his role in combating insurgency and violent crimes in Nigeria.

Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, released a statement on Thursday confirming the IGP’s order for police officers to wear black bands as a mark of respect.

“Following the demise of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has ordered officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to wear black band throughout the 7-day mourning period,” the statement read.

Adejobi further acknowledged Lagbaja’s dedication and gallantry in the fight against insurgency.

“This directive is to pay tribute and honour the late General who has shown gallantry, dedication, and passion for fighting violent crimes and insurgency in Nigeria. He was a great leader who deserves to be honoured by all means.

“May the soul of the late COAS rest in peace.”
