Abuja, NIGERIA – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of the nationwide voter revalidation exercise, which will now take place after the 2027 General Election.
In a statement signed on Friday by National Commissioner Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission emphasized that the exercise is vital for maintaining the integrity of the voter register. Despite the postponement, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, and inclusive elections.
Okay News gathered that the decision was reached following a meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Friday, April 10, 2026. The revalidation exercise is designed to clean up the National Register of Voters by verifying existing records, removing duplicate or ineligible entries, and allowing voters to correct their personal data.
By pushing the exercise until after the 2027 polls, the Commission aims to focus its immediate resources on the upcoming general elections while ensuring the eventual accuracy of the country’s voting database.
