Instagram is rolling out significant changes to its ranking systems in an effort to elevate content from smaller, original creators across the platform.

The move, announced by the Meta-owned social network, aims to provide all creators with equal opportunities for reach and visibility.

Historically, Instagram’s algorithm has favored creators with large followings and accounts that reposted content, often overshadowing smaller creators.

To address this disparity, Instagram is introducing a series of changes over the next few months.

One key change involves adjusting the ranking system to give more distribution to smaller creators and original content.

Reposted content will be replaced with original content in recommendations, and labels will be added to reposted content to attribute it to the original creator. Additionally, content aggregators, such as meme pages and accounts dedicated to reposting, will be excluded from recommendations.

Instagram’s new ranking system will prioritize showing eligible content to a small audience initially, gradually expanding its reach based on engagement.

This approach aims to provide all creators with an equal chance of reaching wider audiences and building their presence on the platform.

Furthermore, Instagram will only recommend the original version of content if it detects multiple identical pieces.

This change ensures that creators receive proper credit for their work and discourages the proliferation of reposted content without attribution.

The platform will also introduce labels on reposted content, linking users to the original creator. While creators currently have the option to remove these labels, Instagram may enforce this feature in the future.

Lastly, Instagram will take action against accounts that repeatedly repost content without adding value.

These accounts, often referred to as content aggregators, will no longer be featured in recommendations, although this change will not impact how content from aggregator accounts is displayed to their followers.
