TEHRAN, Iran — Authorities in the Islamic Republic of Iran have apprehended four individuals accused of working as Israeli spies.

State media reported the arrests on Thursday, April 16, 2026. This development occurs as the Middle East faces heightened tensions following significant military conflicts.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) conducted the operation in Gilan Province. This region sits in the northern part of the country.

Furthermore, the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) confirmed the details in an official statement. The report identifies the suspects as agents linked to the Mossad.

The Mossad serves as the national intelligence agency of the State of Israel. Meanwhile, Okay News reports that the arrests follow a period of intense regional instability.

Intelligence Gathering Allegations

Official statements claim the suspects gathered data on high-security Iranian locations. Consequently, the government has accused them of compromising national defense infrastructure.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps stated: “The arrestees had provided Mossad intelligence officers with images and locations of some sensitive and critical military and security sites via the internet.”

Security forces reportedly tracked the digital communications of the four individuals for a period. Therefore, officials believe the suspects transmitted visual data to foreign handlers.

Iranian authorities have now transferred the group to the national judicial system for prosecution. However, the government has not yet released the specific names or ages of the detainees.

Regional Tensions and Peace Discussions

These arrests follow a massive military escalation that began earlier this year. Specifically, joint United States and Israeli strikes hit Tehran on Saturday, February 28, 2026.

Those strikes triggered a wider conflict across the Middle East. Nevertheless, United States officials are currently discussing potential peace talks with the Iranian administration.

The President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, oversees the government during this delicate diplomatic period. In addition, the IRGC remains on high alert for further foreign intelligence activity.

International observers are monitoring the situation closely as legal proceedings begin. Ultimately, the outcome of this case may influence the success of future diplomatic negotiations.
