TEHRAN, Iran — The military forces of Israel carried out a fresh series of aerial bombardments against targets in Iran on Monday, March 23, 2026. This latest escalation comes as the government of Iran warns of retaliatory strikes against essential infrastructure throughout the Middle East, a conflict that has now triggered what experts describe as the most severe energy crisis in several decades.

Local media in Tehran, the capital of Iran, reported the sound of loud explosions across the city during the early morning hours. Simultaneously, officials in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) stated that their defense systems were actively working to intercept incoming missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as drones.

The Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, reported that at least 40 critical energy assets across this resource-rich region have suffered severe or very severe damage. This assessment comes as the war, which was initiated by joint military actions from Israel and the United States of America against Iran, enters its fourth week of active combat.

In response to these assaults, the Iranian government has launched numerous missiles and drones at Israel and various locations across the Persian Gulf. These retaliatory strikes have targeted energy facilities and United States diplomatic buildings. Furthermore, Iran has restricted movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow and vital sea passage through which approximately 20% of the total global supply of crude oil is transported.

The price of oil is currently fluctuating above $100 per barrel due to intense fears regarding global supply. In response to the maritime restrictions, United States President Donald Trump issued a public warning on social media, threatening to completely destroy Iranian power generation plants if the government in Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. Based on the timing of the announcement, this deadline is set for 23:44 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which corresponds to 00:44 West African Time (WAT) on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

However, the leadership in Iran has remained defiant. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, declared that if the United States follows through with its threats, all vital infrastructure in the region will be viewed as valid military targets and will face total destruction.

Fatih Birol of the International Energy Agency emphasized the gravity of the economic situation, noting that the world is currently losing 11 million barrels of oil every single day. He stated that this volume of lost production exceeds the impact of the major oil crises seen during the 1970s. Birol warned that no nation is safe from the economic fallout and called for urgent international cooperation to address the instability.

Okay News reports that the ongoing conflict has also seen significant activity on other fronts. Israel has intensified its ground operations in the Republic of Lebanon against the militant group Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran. According to the Ministry of Public Health in Lebanon, more than 1,000 people have died since the start of the Israeli strikes, and over one million individuals have been forced to leave their homes.

Within Israel, the government has vowed to continue its campaign against the commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This follows a weekend missile strike by Iran that hit the southern Israeli towns of Dimona and Arad. Dimona is notable for being the location of the Shimon Peres Negev Nuclear Research Center. While Israeli air defenses usually intercept such threats, these particular missiles landed near the facility, resulting in injuries to more than 100 people. Iranian officials claimed this strike was a direct response to a previous attack on their own nuclear facility in Natanz.
