Jigawa State has become the latest to domesticate Nigeria’s new tax reforms, joining Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Kwara in aligning sub-national revenue systems with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu‘s national agenda.
Okay News reports that the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) confirmed the developments in separate statements, highlighting growing legislative momentum to enhance internally generated revenue, financial autonomy, and business-friendly environments.
In Jigawa, the State House of Assembly passed the Harmonised Taxes and Levies Bill, awaiting gubernatorial assent.
The legislation aims to streamline processes, eliminate multiple taxation, ban roadblocks for levy collection, and deploy technology for transparency and leakage prevention.
The JRB commended collaboration between the government, legislature, and Jigawa State Internal Revenue Service.
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang signed the Plateau State Harmonised Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Law on December 31, 2025, establishing coordinated collection to reduce duplication and fund infrastructure and services.
Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi A. Sule enacted the Nasarawa State Revenue Administration Law 2025 and Harmonised Taxes and Levies Law 2025, creating unified systems for tax and non-tax revenues with stronger oversight.
Kogi Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo assented to the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (Establishment) Law 2025 and Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Law 2025 on January 1, 2026, professionalising revenue administration and aligning with national standards.
Kwara State has also advanced steps toward domestication, reinforcing North Central regional commitment.
The reforms consolidate sub-national taxes into nine approved types, outlaw arbitrary collections, and prioritise technology-driven fairness.
Analysts expect reduced burdens on businesses, particularly SMEs, through predictable environments and leakage plugs.
With Jigawa’s move, eight states have now aligned, following Anambra, Zamfara, and Ekiti.
The JRB noted progressing legislation in Lagos, Katsina, and Bauchi, signalling nationwide momentum.
