Majia, Jigawa State, NIGERIA — Governor Umar Namadi has officially announced the completion of the state’s takeover of Khadija University, Majia. The institution, formerly owned by a private investor, has been renamed the Jigawa State University of Medical and Allied Health Sciences.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Governor described the acquisition as the fulfillment of a process initiated two years ago.
Okay News reports that the move is a deliberate effort to expand medical education opportunities within the state and reduce the dependency of Jigawa students on foreign medical degrees.
“For a long time, many of our students have had to travel outside the country to study medicine,” Governor Namadi noted. “With this university in place, we are beginning to change that. It will also help reduce the pressure on families and conserve resources that would have gone outside the country.”
The state government has already commenced infrastructure upgrades and the installation of a new management team to transition the school into a “first-class institution.” The Governor extended his appreciation to the State House of Assembly, the Transition Committee, and the original founder of the university for their vision and cooperation during the handover process.
Local leaders and the Majia community were also lauded for their support. The Governor emphasized that while this acquisition is a significant milestone, it is only the beginning of his administration’s broader strategy to overhaul Jigawa’s healthcare and educational sectors.
