Jorginho sets new record against Newcastle

By Promise Amadi

Chelsea’s summer signing Jorginho has set a new club’s record for passes in a single Premier League game.

He set the record as the Blues defeated Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Maurizio Sarri’s side took the lead from the penalty spot through Eden Hazard but Newcastle quickly equalized through Joselu.

And DeAndre Yedlin touched the ball into his own net late on to secure all three points for Chelsea.

It was three wins out of three for Chelsea under their new manager.

Sarri brought Jorginho with him from Napoli in a £52million deal and the Brazilian-born midfielder has quickly become integral to his side’s midfield control.

And against Newcastle the Italy international set a new record for most successful passes by a Chelsea player in the Premier League – though fell just short of the overall record.

Cesc Fabregas, who is currently injured, was Chelsea’s previous pass master.

Jorginho completed an incredible 158 passes against Newcastle, that is one every 34 seconds.

He also accounted for 15% of the entire possession in the game, the home side had just 18% of the ball total.

Jorginho even completed more passes than the entire Newcastle players.

Just nine of his passes failed to go through, shy of Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan’s record of 167, set last season against Chelsea.

If he continues like this, it’s surely a matter of time before he breaks the record outright.
