According to reports reaching Okay Nigeria, the London police have arrested Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, at Ecuador’s embassy.

Assange has been living at the embassy since he applied for asylum there in 2012.

The U.K. Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest in a tweet on Thursday.

The tweet reads:

“Julian Assange, 47, has today, Thursday 11 April, been arrested by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) at the Embassy of Ecuador,” police tweeted.

The police further explained in another tweet that “He has been taken into custody at a central London police station where he will remain, before being presented before Westminster Magistrates’ Court as soon as is possible.”

However, WikiLeaks reacted to the arrest on Twitter, accusing the Ecuador ambassador of inviting the London police to arrest Assange, which is against his granted asylum.

The response tweet reads:

“Julian Assange did not ‘walk out of the embassy’. The Ecuadorian ambassador invited British police into the embassy and he was immediately arrested.”
