On Democracy Day, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, highlighted the nation’s pivotal role as a stabilising force in West Africa. In a statement released by his spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, Tuggar emphasised that Nigeria’s democratic system continues to serve as a beacon of hope and stability, especially as several neighbouring countries grapple with political unrest.
Tuggar pointed out that, despite widespread democratic setbacks in the region, Nigeria has consistently upheld democratic values through regular elections, peaceful transitions, and strict adherence to constitutional order. “Nigeria stands as a beacon of hope and stability in the region,” he stated, acknowledging that while the country’s institutions are not flawless, their resilience is evident.
The minister further observed that Nigeria’s commitment to electoral accountability, civic engagement, and the rule of law has not only preserved domestic stability but also positioned the country as a reliable democratic partner in West Africa. “In a time when democracy is under assault in parts of West Africa, Nigeria has continued to demonstrate that the rule of law, electoral accountability, and civic participation are essential pillars for long-term peace and development,” Tuggar remarked.
He referenced the current challenges facing the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), particularly in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger, where military coups have disrupted democratic governance. Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring civilian rule, stressing that democracy must remain central to regional conflict resolution.
Drawing on Nigeria’s history of peacekeeping and active participation in ECOWAS, Tuggar underscored the nation’s influence on the broader West African political landscape. He insisted that democratic governance is not solely a domestic issue but a cornerstone of regional stability. “Democracy is not just an internal affair,” he said. “It is our strategic contribution to regional peace. Our progress strengthens the African democratic project as a whole.”
The minister also commended President Bola Tinubu’s leadership in guiding Nigeria towards economic recovery and political consolidation, expressing optimism that ongoing reforms will lay the groundwork for long-term prosperity.
