The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, December 25, 2025, and Friday, December 26, 2025, as public holidays to commemorate Christmas and Boxing Day. Additionally, Thursday, January 1, 2026, has been declared a public holiday to mark the New Year.
Okay News reports that this announcement was made in a statement issued on Monday, December 22, 2025, by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, on behalf of Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in the statement, urged all Nigerians to reflect on the values of love, peace, humility, and sacrifice that are associated with the birth of Jesus Christ.
Tunji-Ojo also called on citizens, irrespective of faith or ethnicity, to use the festive season as a time to pray for national peace, improved security, and overall progress for Nigeria.
Furthermore, the Minister advised Nigerians to remain law-abiding and security-conscious during the celebrations. He concluded by extending his wishes to all citizens for a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
