A LagFerry boat, “Igbega Eko,” experienced a sudden explosion and fire while traveling to Victoria Island, leading to injuries among passengers and a chaotic scramble for safety. The incident occurred on Thursday morning, prompting immediate responses from maritime authorities, okay.ng reports.
The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) confirmed the fire, stating that its personnel were deployed to the scene to prevent further escalation. “There was a bang, and fire suddenly started engulfing the boat. What caused it is yet unclear, but investigations are still ongoing,” a NIWA official stated.
Similarly, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) also acknowledged the incident and confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the fire was underway. In a statement released by LASWA’s Public Affairs Unit, the agency detailed that the incident took place at approximately 6:45 AM at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu.
LASWA reported that the “Igbega Eko” vessel was en route to Victoria Island when the fire broke out. Responding to a distress call, LASWA’s emergency team, along with LAGFERRY personnel, boat operators, and other first responders, worked to manage the situation. The agency confirmed that all passengers and crew were safely evacuated, although four passengers sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.
LASWA emphasized that a thorough preliminary investigation is being conducted in collaboration with LAGFERRY and other stakeholders to determine the cause of the incident. The agency reiterated its commitment to safety and pledged to implement necessary measures to enhance fire prevention on Lagos waterways. LASWA assured the public that ferry operations are continuing as scheduled and encouraged passengers to remain calm and follow safety guidelines.
