The Independent National Electoral Commission has bowed to pressure by postponing the Edo State governorship election by two weeks.

The INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmud Yakubu made the announcement on Thursday in Benin city, the state capital.

The election had earlier been scheduled for Saturday September 10, 2016.

Earlier, the electoral umpire announced that it will continue with the election as scheduled despite security threats.

Recall that the Nigerian Police Force and the Department of State Services, DSS, had yesterday warned the election umpire against going ahead with the election on Saturday, citing security concerns.
