The confirmed nominees are Lateef Kayode Kolawole Are from Ogun State in southwestern Nigeria, Aminu Muhammad Dalhatu from Jigawa State in the northern region, and Emmanuel Ayodele Oke from Oyo State, also in the southwest. Each nominee is expected to serve as a non career ambassador, a role that places emphasis on political trust and national representation rather than long term diplomatic service.
The committee’s approval was reached after deliberations held during the hearing on Tuesday, where members raised questions relating to foreign policy priorities, national image, and bilateral engagement. Lawmakers expressed confidence that the nominees possess the capacity to project Nigeria positively on the global stage.
This latest confirmation comes barely a week after the Senate screened and approved sixty eight ambassadorial nominees in a larger diplomatic clearance exercise. Among those earlier confirmed were the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu; former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani Kayode; former presidential aide, Reno Omokri; and former Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau.
Senate leadership, under the guidance of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has maintained that the staggered confirmation of nominees is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic presence and ensuring efficiency in foreign missions.
