The Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called off its strike, which commenced on February 18, 2025.
This decision was announced on Monday by Dr. Peter Adamu, the KASU ASUU Chairman, following a resolution reached on Saturday.
Dr. Adamu highlighted that the suspension was influenced by the Kaduna State Government’s proactive measures, including the release of funds to address some of the union’s outstanding financial grievances.
Specifically, the government authorized the immediate disbursement of 60% of the withheld salaries from September 2017 and the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) supervision allowances covering five academic sessions.
“The government demonstrated goodwill in resolving the impasse by immediately releasing funds to pay the 60 per cent of September 2017 withheld salaries and Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) supervision allowance for five sessions.”
”The government also agreed to a timeline for the payment of the five months, May to September 2022 withheld salaries, promotion arrears, Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), Pension remittance (2009 to 2019), Death benefits, and Group Life Assurance,” he said.
In addition to these payments, the state government has committed to a structured timeline to settle other pending entitlements.
These include the remaining five months of withheld salaries from May to September 2022, promotion arrears, Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), pension remittances spanning from 2009 to 2019, death benefits, and group life assurance.
The union expressed its appreciation for Governor Uba Sani’s intervention, noting that his leadership was instrumental in resolving the impasse.
Dr. Adamu also acknowledged the efforts of the university’s management, the Commissioners for Education and Sports, and other stakeholders who played pivotal roles in facilitating a swift resolution.
Dr. Adamu urged all academic staff to promptly resume their duties, emphasizing the importance of continuing to provide quality education and services to the university community.
The strike, which lasted for several days, was initially declared due to unresolved issues related to unpaid salaries and allowances.
The union had previously voiced concerns over the non-payment of five months’ salaries from May to September 2022, Earned Academic Allowances dating back to 2015, and other financial entitlements
