The Kano State Government in northern Nigeria has approved more than ₦8.2 billion (approximately $5.2 million) for a wide range of development projects aimed at improving education, water supply, and energy efficiency across the state.
The approval followed the 33rd meeting of the State Executive Council, chaired by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, according to a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature.
Bature explained that ₦4.9 billion of the total amount was allocated to education-related projects. These include the second phase of renovations at the Government Technical College, Ungogo, the settlement of outstanding payments to boarding school feeding suppliers, and the production of instructional materials through the Kano Printing Press.
He added that part of the funds would also be used to complete and furnish an e-library at the Kano State College of Education and Preliminary Studies and to support accreditation exercises at Kano State Polytechnic.
The state government further approved the procurement of new office furniture and fittings for Northwest University, Kano, which it said would improve both academic and administrative efficiency.
“Education remains the cornerstone of our development agenda, and we will continue to invest in facilities that promote quality teaching and learning,” the statement read.
Okay News reports that in addition to the education sector, another ₦3.3 billion was approved for projects targeting clean water access and sustainable energy.
According to Bature, this funding covers the construction of a modern water treatment plant at Taliwaiwai in Rano Local Government Area and the payment of electricity and fuel bills owed by the State Water Board to ensure uninterrupted operations.
Part of the budget will also settle debts owed to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), as well as the procurement of diesel and petrol for water treatment facilities.
“These interventions will guarantee steady water supply, improve energy efficiency, and promote better living standards for the people of Kano,” the statement added.
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing investments that directly benefit citizens and advance infrastructural development across the state.
Earlier in August 2025, the Kano State Government had approved contracts worth ₦40.8 billion for the construction and rehabilitation of 17 major township roads across the Kano metropolitan area, covering local government areas such as Gwale, Nasarawa, Kumbotso, and Dala.
