KANO, Nigeria – The vice presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, formally received a prominent grassroots mobiliser of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Hon. Sani Kabiru, into the opposition party on Sunday, September 6, 2026, his media office announced in Kano.
The defection marks a notable grassroots shift in the densely populated Nasarawa Local Government Area, where Kabiru previously served as a key field strategist and Voters Coordinator for the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 general election cycle.
Okay News reports that Kwankwaso hosted the defecting political leader and his supporters at his residence in Kano, where Kabiru formally renounced his membership of the APC and pledged unreserved loyalty to the NDC and the broader Kwankwasiyya political movement.
During the reception ceremony, Kwankwaso commended Kabiru for his decision to join the opposition fold, assuring him of equity, internal democracy, and equal participation in the party’s grassroots structures across Kano State.
Kabiru reaffirmed his commitment to the NDC’s national reform agenda, stating that his exit from the ruling party was guided by the need to align with a political platform dedicated to addressing widespread socioeconomic challenges and restoring responsive governance.
Sunday’s political development comes barely 24 hours after Kwankwaso returned to Kano on Saturday morning following an intensive, high-level consultative tour of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, alongside NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi.
During the southern engagement, the NDC standard-bearers engaged northern business communities, traditional Hausa elders, and youth formations at the “Obi Talks Nigeria” town hall, where Kwankwaso warned that widespread economic hardship has unified citizens across regional lines against the incumbent administration.
Political observers view the reception of grassroots mobilisers in Nasarawa Local Government Area as part of sustained efforts by the NDC leadership to reinforce its foundational base in Kano, solidifying voter consolidation across key urban councils as campaign activities intensify nationwide.
